Former Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has today announced his retirement from professional football.
Torres, who left Atletico Madrid for one final payday in the Chinese Super League, announced the saddening news on Twitter early on Friday.
He said;
I have something very important to announce. After 18 exciting years, the time has come to put an end to my football career. Next Sunday, the 23rd at 10:00AM, local time in Japan, I will have a press conference in Tokyo to explain all the details.See you there.
Torres is a unique case, having failed to produce his best performance level in a Chelsea shirt, but still being widely adored by the supporters.
We cheered that little bit louder when it was he who found the back of the net. His goal at the Nou Camp in 2012 also remains one of the most iconic in the club’s history

Ultimately, his career will be remembered as a tale of two halves, having been truly world-class in his prime but frustratingly poor after his departure from Liverpool.
He wrote his name into our history books, though, and will be remembered fondly as a result. We wish him all the best as he embarks on the next chapter of his life.
